OB Win's Butterfly House "Plant Grant"

Old Bonhomme Elementary school was recently awarded a “plant grant” from the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House as part of their Project Pollinator initiative. This yearly award was one of only two gifts given in the community and will include 32 native pollinator plants and an hour long consultation with horticulturist Brie Wilson of the Butterfly House.
The native pollinator garden, built in 2016, is located along the front of Old Bonhomme Elementary between the library and black top and is a space for students to gain an understanding of native systems through hands on experience and observation. Native plants naturally occur in our region of the US and are adapted to thrive in Missouri's climate and soil conditions. These important plant species provide nectar, pollen, and seeds as well as nesting ground and shelter for native butterflies, insects, birds and other animals.
This addition to the current plantings is an exciting first step in several growth initiatives for the coming year. Stay tuned for further improvements as we continue to develop community spirit within the school gardens by bringing students, faculty, families, community and business together.
